How Tax Brackets Work
The U.S. uses a progressive tax system, meaning you pay different rates on different portions of your income. For example, if you're single and earn $50,000, you don't pay 22% on all of it - you pay 10% on the first $11,600, 12% on income from $11,601 to $47,150, and 22% only on the remaining amount.
Standard Deduction for 2026
- • Single: $14,600
- • Married Filing Jointly: $29,200
- • Head of Household: $21,900
